Building Stagecraft. One Performance at a Time.

CREATIVE

LAB

Create - Practice - Perform

OUR STORY

Creative Theatre Lab emerged from a love of the narrative arts and the craft of storytelling. We wanted to see more performances that fire the imagination and bring a world to life for an audience, whether through a collective or one-person show.

We wanted a space for emerging artists to build the ability to truly captivate a room. Through immersive training, inventive labs and live shows, we empower individuals to gain self-assurance, hone their artistry, and claim their spotlight.

TRAINING & WORKSHOPS

  • Narrative Improv Workshop - with Liam Webber

    Sunday 22nd November

Narrative improv asks us to balance two seemingly contradictory things: making bold, instinctive choices in the moment while working together to tell a satisfying story. In this one-day workshop, we'll explore how to make strong story choices without getting stuck in our heads.

  • Learn Mime - a 6 week course coming in 2027

Coming in 2027 - sign up to be notified!

Build a deeper understanding of the mechanics of physical expression using the principles of mime. Explore the power of gesture, posture and facial expression and how it can provoke an audience’s imagination through precision, timing and rhythm.

Previous Courses
  • Characters through Physicality

An introduction to embodied techniques for creating characters through physicality and movement. Explore how movement, gesture and imagination work together to create distinctive, believable characters using Laban/Chekhov techniques. Laban developed a language for observing and creating movement. Chekhov uses imagery to transform the actor's inner and outer worlds creating believable, inspired characters.

  • You are Enough - storytelling for performers

How to use what you already have to bring characters and stories to life. This is a one day workshop exploring character and story tools for performance and creating/writing solo shows. We’ll look at what we ‘get for free’ – our bodies, our instincts, our voices – to develop an understanding of what is already happening without our even knowing it when we walk onstage.

  • Introduction to Mime workshop

This is a one day workshop that focuses on the fundamental principles of mime and physical storytelling. Skills include the core elements of physical articulation, using illusionary objects, creating strong stage presence and creating something from nothing by sculpting the space around you.

"Richard Knight is the most gently insightful teacher I have ever worked with. He has a way of taking apart your performance, tweaking it, and helping you put it back together into something that is still recognisably your performance but somehow much, much better"

Daniel - Character Through Physicality (Laban/Chekhov) student

"The mime workshop was interesting, challenging and fun. As well as learning about mime as an art form, the skills also enhanced my improv stagecraft. We had an engaging and well prepared teacher who knows his craft well and how to encourage others to learn the skills and the value of taking things one step at a time."
